New research conducted at UCLA shows evidence that fresh Hass avocado may neutralize some of the negative effects of eating a hamburger.

The pilot study looked at the inflammatory response in 11 male subjects after eating a plain burger patty compared to a burger with fresh avocado. It specifically looked at the peripheral arterial blood flow which is a general predictor of vascular health.

Results showed a 27% decrease in blood flow after eating the plain burger compared to only a 4% decrease after the burger with avocado. This initial finding suggest that avocado may counteract or neutralize Interleukin-6, a pro-inflammatory protein.

Inflammation and narrowing of the blood vessels are major risk factors for heart disease. Further research is needed to determine the extent to which avocados may help in reducing these risks.

Along with these possible health benefits, avocado on your burger also tastes pretty good.
